A Journey of Runes and Initiation
Glimpse the Hidden Realms through this Poetic Window!
Yggdrasill, Yggdrasill,
Yggdrasill I call,
and self to Self
I sing with speech!
I truly stand —
a stately tree;
the awesome sound,
the ash I sing.
Peering down,
darkness lifting,
the runes I scry,
screaming fiercely!
The words I speak
are a wisdom spell;
from word to word
by word I go.
From work to work
by work I go,
then Fuþark, Fuþark,
Fuþark I call.
I rist the runes
and redden them well;
the fimbul staves
are filled with might.
The runes I found,
the runes I took,
the holy runes
I rightly name!
Four and twenty
are the twigs of blood;
strong are the staves
I stain in self.

Hear Them through Poetry!
As Wode-Bearer,
with will I speak
to inspire the self with song.
I rown the Runes
and rede them well,
a song of sayings without
as galdor for going within.
Fehu the Fee
is the fire of life —
that gold is strife and strength.
Deal it well
for a doom that’s best:
to many that force should flow
and within that fire will flame.
Uruz the Aurochs
is the awful beast
whose horns give wyrd to the well.
Seek the power
of primal forms
that lurk and live in wilds
to light and lift the self.
Þurisaz the Thorn
is the threat of danger,
a sharp and harrowing harm.
Treat with care
that tricky etin
to save your skin from scrape
and save your spirit from spoil.
Ansuz the Ancestor
is the awesome god
and master of word and wode.
Journey along
his joyous path
in the world and gain your goals,
in the self and seek your runes.
Raiðo the Wagon
is the rightful toil
of the loyal and helpful horse.
Work to maintain
the wheels and axles
of your ride in the world all-wide
for your ride through realms unseen.
Kenaz the Torch
is the crafty fire
that is rightly set to serve.
Burn it bright
— being careful —
to forge your life with lust
and forge your spirit with spells.
Gebo the Gift
is the giving exchange
of two between themselves.
Give and take
with greatest wisdom
to honor your friends and folk
and honor your self and soul.
Wunjo the Joy
is the wonderful blessing
and work of fellows in frith.
Blend with wisdom
this bounty for weal
to grow in grith with friends
and among your souls inside.
Hagalaz the Hail
is the hardest trial
and grain of coldest corn.
Weather well
this world of storms,
and tend your seeds outside
to wax a Word within.
Nauðiz the Need
is the narrow resistance
upon your plans and goals.
Strive against it,
starting a fire,
to keep the cold away
and build your might and main.
Isa the Ice
is the arctic land:
it is hard against your growth.
Work in wisdom
with winter’s force
to bring a rightful rest
and clear a clouded mind.
Jera the Year
is the yearned-for harvest
and cycle for grinding gold.
Properly plant
with patient work
to reap the world’s rewards
and grow the gains of spirit.
Æhwaz the Yew
is the evergreen wood
and a link to life and death.
Study it well
and strive for its fire
to wax in lore of worlds
and surge in lore of self.
Perþro the Piece
is the play with lots
and sumbel’s spirited speech.
Learn the layers
and live with wode
to win through rightful risk
and die with soaring soul.
Algiz the Swan
is the awesome valkyrie
and a link to glorious gods.
Raise your gaze
to the rainbow bridge
and in nature know the gods
so in spirit you’ll greet the gods.
Sowilo the Sun
is the sought-for stone
and the sailor’s guide and grace.
Mind that wheel
when wandering around
to keep in the world your way
and keep in your life that light.
Tiwaz the God
is the trothful one
whose courage secured the wolf.
Carve his name
and call on him twice
for victory in war and work
and victory in self and soul.
Berkano the Birch
is the barren tree
that is bright with limbs and leaves.
Water it well
to wax in being
and become a force in fact
to become a might with main.
Ehwaz the Horse
is the excellent partner
and best for riding through realms.
Honor him well
and always keep him
for blessings and boons in life
and help and health in spirit.
Mannaz the Man
is the middle being,
vital to the work of worlds.
Grow the gifts
given by Óðinn
for honor from kith and kin
and glory from heroes and gods.
Laguz the Lake
is the liquid deep
and land of whales and waves.
Search that dark
and seek its gold
to master the might of seas
and master the main of souls.
Ingwaz the Hero
is the earthly lord
who over the wave then went.
Go out, come back,
and grow in between
to change your worldly wyrd
and change your spark of spirit.
Dagaz the Day
is the dearest of lights
by Drighten sourced and sent.
Mightily seek
its mirth and hope
to work awake with light
and soar aware with wode.
Oþala the Legacy
is the ancestors’ gift,
the strong estate with walls.
Graciously guard
this greatest treasure
to preserve your kindred clan
and the trust of tribal spirit.
Rûna the Mystery
is the rightful source
of the runes we name and know.
Ever and always
with effort seek her
in worlds all-wide without,
in worlds all-wide within,
and in forms of flesh between.
I’ve sung complete
a song of mysteries
and poured it through might of mead.
Deeply drink
this draught of runes
to alter with ale your Self
and alter with ale the World.

Eirik Westcoat has been in Initiate of the Rune-Gild since 2011, and a Master since 2016. Early on in his work, he realized his Quest was to win and pour Óðrœrir, the Mead of Poetry. Among other things, this led to him writing lots of alliterative poems about his runic initiation work. He’s collected them here in Eagle’s Mead (his second book), providing a unique window into the Work of the Rune-Gild.
ᚠ The flowing Fire of Fee within
ᚢ ordered my Urox power

ᚨ through Aesir’s Ale and Oaken fettle
ᚱ to rightly Ride the worlds
ᚲ with kindled Torch of craft.
Great All-shining, you are Everglow,
the Fair-Wheel and famed Sky Fire;
as mighty Sunna, send me your main,
and fill my life with your light
to speed my spirited soul!
